Matcha and Green Tea often get mentioned in the same breath, but for tea lovers, they are worlds apart. While they originate from the exact same plant, the journey from the soil to your cup creates two entirely different experiences in flavour, colour, and health benefits.

At the most basic level, the difference lies in how you prepare and drink them:
Green Tea: You steep the dried leaves in hot water and then discard them. You are drinking a "water extract" of the plant.
Matcha: You whisk the entire leaf—ground into a microscopic powder—directly into your liquid. You aren't just steeping the tea; you are consuming the whole leaf.

Both teas come from the Camellia Sinensis plant, but their "upbringing" is very different.
Most green teas are grown in full sunlight. Once harvested, they are quickly steamed or pan-fired to stop oxidation, preserving that fresh, "green" character. Our Jasmine Green Tea, for example, is infused with fresh jasmine blooms to add a delicate, floral aroma to the crisp tea base.

Matcha is far more labour-intensive. About three weeks before harvest, the plants are covered to block out 90% of sunlight. This forces the plant to overproduce chlorophyll (turning it a deep, vivid green) and L-theanine (an amino acid that promotes relaxation). Because you consume the whole leaf with Matcha, the nutritional stats are significantly amplified. Research suggests that one cup of high-quality Matcha can contain the antioxidant equivalent of roughly 10 cups of regularly brewed green tea.
