Keeping Your Bubble Tea Safe: Easy Food Safety Tips

Making tasty bubble tea is brilliant, but the most important thing is making sure it's safe for your customers to drink. Nobody wants to make someone feel poorly!

Good food safety keeps your customers happy and healthy. It also keeps your shop's good name and means you won't have problems when the food safety officers from the council pop round.

Here are the main things you need to remember for your bubble tea shop here in the UK.

Rule 1: Wash Your Hands Loads!

    • This is the best way to stop nasty germs spreading.
    • Wash hands properly with soap and warm water often, especially:
      • Before starting work
      • After touching bins or money
      • After going to the loo
      • Before handling food or drinks

Rule 2: Keep Yourself & The Place Clean

    • Wear clean clothes or aprons.
    • Wipe down counters and clean equipment (like blenders, shakers, scoops) as you go along. Don't wait till the end of the day!
    • Use proper cleaning sprays that are safe for food areas.

Rule 3: Stay Home If You're Ill

    • If you or your staff have sickness or diarrhoea (an upset tummy), you must stay away from work.
    • Don't come back until you've had no symptoms for 48 hours (that's 2 whole days). This is a standard UK rule.

Rule 4: Keep Cold Food Cold!

    • Germs love warm places. Keep cold food in the fridge to stop them growing.
    • Your fridge needs to be below 5°C. Check the temperature every day.
    • Milk, creamers, opened juices, and syrups usually need to stay in the fridge.
    • If you make big batches of tea, cool it down quickly before putting it in the fridge. Don't leave warm tea sitting out for ages.

Rule 5: Handle Cooked Pearls Carefully! (The Tricky Bit)

    • Cooked tapioca pearls taste best fresh. But cooked starchy foods can let germs grow quickly if they're left warm.
    • Best plan: Cook pearls in small batches often during the day. Use them up quickly.
    • Storing cooked pearls? Be VERY careful:
      • It's much safer to use them fresh.
      • If you have to store some, cool them down fast and keep them in the fridge (below 5°C).
      • Only keep them for a very short time. Check the official UK food safety rules (FSA website or your SFBB pack) for exactly how long is safe – it's not long at all!
      • Never mix old pearls with a fresh batch.
      • If in doubt, chuck it out! Don't risk making someone ill.

Rule 6: Stop Allergens Spreading! (Really Important!)

    • Some people have bad reactions to certain foods (allergies).
    • Common things in bubble tea shops people can be allergic to are: Milk (dairy), Soy (in soy milk), Nuts (sometimes in flavours), and maybe Gluten (check powders).
    • You MUST know what allergens are in your ingredients and tell customers clearly (it's the law in the UK). Keep a list handy.
    • Stop allergens spreading by mistake:
      • Use separate, clean scoops for different toppings and powders.
      • Wash blenders really well between drinks, especially after using dairy milk if the next drink is dairy-free.
      • Wash your hands after handling allergens.

Rule 7: Follow Your Food Safety Plan!

    • The Food Standards Agency (FSA) makes the food safety rules in the UK.
    • Lots of small food shops use the "Safer Food, Better Business" (SFBB) pack from the FSA. It's a diary and guide to help you keep food safe.
    • Use your plan: Follow the advice in your SFBB pack or whatever written food safety plan you have.
    • Keep simple records: The council officers like to see records (like fridge temperatures). Use the diary in your SFBB pack.

    Stay Safe, Keep Serving!

It might sound like a lot, but good food safety is mostly common sense and getting into good habits. Being clean, keeping things cold, handling pearls right, and watching out for allergies means safe, yummy bubble tea for everyone.

That keeps your customers safe, happy, and coming back for more!

Quick Note: This is just simple advice. Always check the latest official rules from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and your local council's food safety team.
